Sophia Jones, the socially unstable, slightly mentally unstable, yet artistically profound photographer was born on February 15th, 1969. A native east-coaster, she grew up in the west of Virginia on a small plot of land around the Appalachian mountains in Charlottesville. She lives a determined yet restricted life (She always keeps her curly hair straight, below the ears yet above the shoulders). She studied for her BFA at Liberty University while nearly being kicked out for a myriad of stupid reasons; the “sexualization” of the nude figure, “inciting a riot”, and possible sales of illegal substances that they never seemed to catch on her, amongst other things. Eventually, she moved on to study at the San Francisco Art Institute for her MFA, a complete 180 from her BFA experience.
Fast forward to 2014, Sophia has worked with every star there is, spoken to every artist who has been appreciated, and has discovered every hit that is recognized today and is somehow at the bottom. From a combination of poor relationship upkeep with various industry people, money mismanagement (both on her and her mediocre accountant/friend’s part), and the impact of Annie Leibovitz’s 2009 portrait of Miley Cyrus pulling attention away from her and towards Leibovitz, she has experienced a slight collapse in her career.
These factors along with her supposedly intense attitude during shoots and controversy circulating the treatment of her models (mostly young, naked boys) has put her in an unfortunate circumstance. Fortunately, because of her infamy and her habit of stimulating the controversial pocket of the contemporary art world, She has been accepted to participate in a prestigious fine art residency sponsored by the MoMA’s Alaskan/Canadian branch, a possible way to reattach a favorable connotation to her persona and work.
